Genesis 14

There are a few things in this life that we earn and there are a few things in life that is given to us. Some of those things were given from the world, and some where not. Validation – that’s a power people give to the world. Opinion. Emotion. Acceptance. All things people give to the world. Posting a picture on Facebook in hopes to get “liked” by someone who has been a “friend” for a year & a half, but have never actually met you in person. Some people feel as though social media is a right of passage. Or if they have a certain pair of shoes. Or a particular handbag. Or if they are admitted into a specific club. Or if they are able to get a particular table in a particular location of a particular restaurant on a particular evening during particular hours. And if you don’t get it, your night is ruined. All powers people give to the world…. but joy.

Joy is the one thing that is not given to us by the world. Joy only comes from one place. Heaven. And that one simple 3-letter word is the one thing that should not be taken by the world. The one thing the world never has the right to take. And the only way they can take it is if you give it to them. Not one person walking God’s green earth should have the authority to take your joy. But so many times a day, the devil comes. And when he comes, he’s only out for one thing – your joy. To steal, kill, and destroy your joy. The thief. And he will take any avenue possible to get to your joy. Your enemy? Nah, that would just be too easy. You’d see it coming a mile away. No, he comes through your coworker two cubicles down… your boss who’s the only thing that lies between you and your next promotion… your girlfriend… your 8-year old child… your 20-years-and-counting best friend… down to the stranger who just cut you off in traffic whom you’ll never see in your life again.

People tell me they hate it when I say I don’t care. They say it sounds so…. cold. I asked what do you mean ‘cold’? Like… I don’t care? They respond with frown lines on their forehead – Yes! They ask, well, what Do you care about?? Listen… the only thing anyone should care about is time. On this planet, time is the only thing we can’t get back. And if you care and respect time, then the only thing left to care about is joy. Because when you cherish life and respect death, the only thing you won’t take for granted is joy.

Never let anyone steal your joy. No matter what they have going on in their lives, that day, in that moment – don’t let it overcome what you’ve been blessed with. Greed, hate, and envy can consume you so fast you won’t even know what hit you. Your perfect day could turn to the worst ever in an instant, all by someone coming in and destroying your joy.

For one, recognize your thieves. When you identify who is trying to steal your joy, you can avoid it a little easier. I’m not saying to be paranoid, but definitely be aware. When that conversation starts to go into a direction you think you might not feel comfortable with, point it out. Stop it before it gets too far, because the devil can come in in an instant to trap and trick you.

For two, understand your purpose is to give. It’s in our DNA. That is why we feel so good when we give, when it comes from the heart. When you share your joy with someone who needs it, your joy will always be increased.

Finally, be thankful even when you don’t feel like it. It sounds bad but it’s realistic. Make a joyful noise at all times. They say when you don’t feel like working out, the best thing you can do is to just make the first step to go into the gym. You’ll get more of a workout by going and not wanting to be there, than not going at all. Humility is the same. When you’re not in the mood to be thankful, but you’re thankful anyway, it shows you don’t take your blessings for granted, and you understand it could always be worse. Take life one day at a time and be patience. Enjoy each little moment and don’t let those negative ones get near you. Be aware. Be protected. Be joyful.
